Your Ultimate Tool Backpack Buying Guide and Tips
What is a Tool Backpack?
A tool backpack means that it can distribute the weight of tools properly without straining one's muscles.
Tool backpacks are one of the most important things in personal tool management for handyman and their crews on the go.
Tool backpack provides an efficient way to transport one's tools around his work area and keep them organized, secured, easily accessible and at hand where one needs them.
Whether one is working on the ground or up to a ladder, he should have a tool backpack. Specialized tool backpack is made to make sure that your tools and accessories stay safe and stay organized. So, that you always have them at hands reach when you need them.
How to Choose the Right Tool Backpack
Every trade has its own tools. That's why different job needs a different tool. So, an electrician will have different storage needs from carpenters. Some may also want a tool backpack with a laptop compartment.
A perfect tool backpack is a must for every repairman/handyman. A lot of people like to work in a traditional way. There is no doubt, carrying tools in a traditional or very ancient way will hurt your back and limit your operating skills.
Once you buy a tool backpack, you’d definitely want it to do its job properly, right?
The wrong choice of a backpack causes many problems during the working sessions. A handyman has to work in different complicated conditions. So, they face a lot of problems while working as polluted air, high voltage, extreme climatic condition, little space, work on height, hard to reach places.
It's most important to choose a tool backpack which suits with your tools properly. Knowing the weight of the tools of your trade you will carry most often, will help you find the perfect tool backpack for you to carry comfortably.
Be careful, a bad choice of a tool backpack could cause you to fall from a big height and hurt you.
Things to Consider When Choosing a Tool Backpack
There are many criteria to consider before you buy a tool backpack. You should know these if you want to buy the best backpack for tools. These are:
- Handyman Type
- Durability and resistance
- Fabric and waterproofing
- One-handing operating
- Weight Distribution
Let's discuss all these criteria in detail:
Handyman Type is very important criteria when it comes to the choice of a backpack for tools. Handyman of different trade needs different tools.
You may be a plumber, a mason, a carpenter, a painter, a decorator, an electrician, a roofer, a whitesmith, a handyman for thermal and cooling devices, a ceramist or a universal repairman. All don't need the same thing.
I already said that every trade has its own tools that's why they have different requests. Some need to carry power tools where he goes, some needs to carry a laptop. Many handymen like to work in an ancient/traditional way without using modern aids.
Tools to Cope and Tool Size
Tools and protective instruments are very important for each handyman.
A carpenter needs bigger tools but his tools are fewer. An electrician carries a lot of tools but the size of the tools is smaller. Some handyman needs to carry many protection instruments such as helmet, musk, handyman suit, gloves etc.
To determine if the tool backpack good for you, firstly calculate your tool size and number accurately.
Size is definitely the most important criteria when it comes to choosing a tool backpack.
When you want to carry your tools in your tool backpack, you need something that’s going to hold everything you need for work every day but not too bulky or heavy to carry.
Tool backpacks are normally divided into two partitions: Big ones and the small ones. The big sizes of tool backpacks are generally 15+ inches long. The thickness and the width of the tool backpack don’t have strict criteria to consider. the most important factor to consider is the height.
Some tool backpacks can be very thick, but it doesn't mean that the backpack will be bigger. Thickness will tell more about the internal loop numbers and backpack profile and functionality. Thicker backpack means that it has the ability to place more tools. Too small backpack affects negatively on production rate and too big backpack leave too much free space.
If you're working in a tight place, it will be better to have a backpack that is smaller and stands next to your back, without taking up too much room.
But if your job doesn't require too much work in the heights and you need to carry a lot of tools, then you can easily take a bigger backpack.
A well-organized tool backpack will make your everyday work easier. The most important thing about the organization is the pocket and loops number of the backpacks. Some tool backpacks have a lot of pockets and loops and some backpacks have fewer pockets and loops.
There are also backpacks with internal and external pockets, big loops and pockets and small loops and pockets. A large number of pockets is not good if the pockets are small and not practical.
Too big storage selection will increase the possibility of damage because it will enable tools to knock into each. On the other hand, you won't be able to keep essential tools, if your selections are too small.
If loops are too wide, tools may not be settled well. Too narrow loops will also cause problems. I suggest you create one big loop out of two small.
Price is a limiting factor. Everyone has a different budget limit. If you don't have enough money, then it will limit your choice.
High-quality backpacks are generally expensive than regular ones. But price isn't the only indicator of the quality of the backpack.
By the way, it is better to buy a branded backpack if possible as they are more reliable than a backpack made by an unknown company. You should also check if it is worth the price.
There are a lot of manufacturers in the market that produces tool backpack. You have to pick one from a trusted brand. Some of the trusted brands are Milwaukee, CLC, DEWALT, Carhart, Rugged Tools and Klein Tools.
Opening and Closures
Choose a tool backpack that comes with strong closures. Because strong closures will keep your tools safe inside the backpack. You need to secure your tools if you carry a lot of expensive tools; whether the backpack is in a van or your back.
There are two types of closure:
- Bucket style
- Zip style
Bucket style is easy to open on the top. It will be the best choice if you don't work on height. The zip closure will be better if you're working in construction sites, tight place or on a ladder. Internal zips are good for smaller tools. This actually depends on your work/job.
A tool bag backpack is not good if it is unable to hold all your heavy equipment and doesn't last for a long time. A backpack that comes with extra protection is the best backpack for tools in any situation.
The material of the backpack and rubber tray on the bottom are two important key things. If the backpack is made of good material such as polyester, then the backpacks will be more durable.
Some backpacks have a rubber tray on the bottom means that the backpack is more resistant. carrying sharper and too light tools could stick pierce the backpack or it will fall apart while you're working with it.
Fabric and Water-resistance
It will be great if the backpack is 100% waterproof. Being 100% waterproof is an important requirement to be a perfect tool backpack. It is very important to keep the tools protected, regardless of the weather conditions.
But unfortunately, some of the backpacks are not designed to be waterproof. Traditional backpacks are usually made of plastic and not durable. Except for roofers and masons, most type of handyman very rarely works outside.
It will be better to have a rubber tray on the bottom. If the backpack has it, then you can put your bag on the wet ground or mud without any tension. Because water will not be able to soak it. The rubber of the bottom also enables friction.
Firstly, get an idea of how many pockets you need for your tools. Purchasing a tool backpack that has fewer pockets than the number of the tools you have, then it will do you no good. The number of compartments should be enough as well as the loops.
To avoid confusion in working time, the pockets must be organized well. The pockets should also be stretchy or sizeable to make sure that it holds the tools safely and firmly.
You have to consider the depth of the compartments if you are going to deal with small types of tools like a computer or electrical technicians. For this kind of tiny accessories, shallow pockets will be ideal.
Considering the average weight of a tool bag backpack, they are three types: Heavy backpacks, light backpacks, and ultralight backpacks.
Heavy backpacks weight over 6 lbs, light backpack weight under 6 lbs and ultralight backpacks weigh under 2 lbs(this value depends).
If your backpack has firm padding on the back and straps, It will prevent your bag from digging in.
A stiff back plate is also recommended. Hip, chest and weight straps will give the possibility to spread the weight across your body.
If your backpack doesn't have these straps, then you can install the straps afterward. Though It costs more money, we suggest you choose a backpack with straps because it prevents your back.
Can it Stand on its Own?
If a backpack can stand on its own or not may seem like a silly question. But is as important as if the tool backpack has enough much space to hold all your working tools.
Since most handymen may need to pick up their tool while the backpack is still on the ground, a tool bag that can stand on its own is obviously a good one.
If your backpack can stand on its own, you will realize that you won't need to take a lot of time in retrieving the tool that you would like to use.
On the other hand, a backpack that cannot stand on it can give you a hard time when retrieving an item since you may have to use both hands to do that. Because your one hand will focus on supporting the bag while the other hand will be focusing on retrieving your needed tool.
Great quality tool backpacks available in the market has the ability to stand vertically on their own to make it easy to pick a tool when the user is working.
Another option is worth considering getting a flat opening backpack is that it is a great option since the backpack can allow all the tools to be laid down. Doing that you can get a view of each one of them and pick the needed tool easily.
Adjustable Padded Straps
Choose a backpack that has padded shoulder and back straps. Padded shoulder straps are very important when you are carrying too much weight. But it will be very uncomfortable if the straps too small or too big. Avoid this kind of backpack that has only one shoulder straps. It may cause injuries.
Choose a backpack that has this possibility. It will be surely better. But, this awesome feature is more present with solar or hunting backpacks. Though the backpacks with this ability will be very expensive, you will get awesome benefits too!
Every person has different ways to view the world.
For example, someone doesn't like the specific color, while someone is the lover of this color. Someone doesn't want a backpack that has a lot of pockets and loops. Again, someone will hate the backpack that has fewer pockets and loops. Someone will ignore the specific backpack only because he hates the color.
Every person has its own choice, style, advantages, and disadvantages. you've to find out yours.
It's better to have a handle at the top of your backpack. If you have, then it will be awesome. You can pick your backpack easily by this handle. This top carry handle will give you extra facilities to carry.
If your backpack comes with a reflector, then it will be awesome. The reflector is used for additional protection against the vehicle.
- Padded Back Frame
A padded back frame is essential if you have back pain. Padded back frame distributes the weight and makes carrying more comfortable. It also allows air to get inside by creating a small space between your bag and bag.
Who Needs a Tool Backpack
Almost all handyman needs a backpack for tools. Especially Electrician, HVAC, Carpenter, Whitesmith, Mason, Plumber, Decorator needs them most.
Why Do You Need a Tool Backpack?
Studies revealed that about 20% of occupational falls that occurs each year in the USA mostly results from using a ladder. A tool backpack will help you to keep your arms free to hold the ladder firmly and avoid such accidents.
Construction workers can also be safe from tripping as a result of littered tools. Moreover, they should carry their backpacks in a way that keeps them free from hitting other construction workers face.
A tool backpack gives you the ability to carry a lot more tools and take up fewer spaces. No doubt, carrying a traditional bag is hard to carry and it causes many problems. If you use local public transport, then the backpack will be too much better than a traditional bag, because it will take less space.
If you use a traditional bag, the tools will knock each other down because of enough space. Your tool may be seriously damaged by too much friction. Though your tools are durable, this will surely make damage to your tools. So you must have a backpack for tools.
Tool backpack offers zip closure and bucket style closure. On the contrary, the traditional bag offers zip closure rarely. Some backpack comes with a LED light inside it. DeWalt DGCL33 is one of them. This light will help you to find the proper tool, no matter how much dark it is.
Tool Backpacks generally weigh less than 6 lbs. And a good tool backpack is always lightweight. While traditional bags are made of heavier materials with too much weight. They are rarely available under 10 lbs.

If you don't take proper care of backpack's zipper, then you may need to get another backpack yet. Do you remember, how much time and effort you took to buy your backpack? I think it took a lot of time and effort.
3 Simple Ways to Extend the Life of Your Backpack’s Zippers
1. Don't Force It
The first process to proper zipper care is to not overwork them. It's a golden role. Overstuffing your backpack can put stress on the zippers. When you're putting more load on your bag than the recommended capacity, you are overloading the zippers. Did you notice, when you overload your backpack, it becomes difficult to close the zippers.
However, if you want to load your bag with a lot of stuff, pull the material closer before zipping it shut. When your bag is full, don't use the zipper to force your bag closed. At that time, pull the material together and then zip it closed.
The same logic applies when the material would get stuck in the zipper. Don't force it open or vice versa. You will only make the problem worse. In that time, back out the zipper away from the snag. pull the material out or push it back if possible. Secondly, try to close the zipper again. Reduce the force exerted on your zipper by drawing it from the metal tab, not from any fabric pullers or loops.
There is another method that can be applied. You can brush the zipper with vinegar. This would help the material caught loosen. This method also helps when your zippers become rusted.
Always keep in mind that, "the gentle you are with your backpack, the more they will be", I mean the longer they will last.
2. Clean your Zippers
Getting dirt and girt caught between the teeth of the zipper is a very common issue that will cut short your backpacks zipper's lifespan. Keeping your backpack's zippers clean is quite an easy task and requires minimal work.
- While washing your backpack, always follow the manufacturer's recommendations. Taking care of your backpack by following the manufacturer's instruction is the best way.
- Clean your zippers with water and soap. Wash the backpack's zipper with more force at any dirty spots. Before washing, remove anything caked on to the teeth or obstructing zipper movement.
- Dry your backpack and zippers thoroughly after washing. Always follow the care instructions on your backpack.
3. Lubricate your Zippers
Now you know how to manage zippers and clean them. The next step can be a helpful preventative measure and it is lubricating your backpacks' zippers. Lubricating your backpack's zippers will ensure that your zippers will continue to zip smoothly. Make sure to clean your backpack's zippers before applying any lubricant.
Especially, if you're using tool backpack, then you should always clean your backpack zippers properly before lubricating. Because tool backpack has more possibility to be affected by dirt as they have to work in many dirty places and situations.
There are plenty of lubricants you can use. You can use Parrafin wax, Crayons, Teflon Silicone Lubricant etc as the lubricant.
The three steps that I stated above are the most important rules in zipper maintenance. These are: Never force the backpack's zipper, Keep it clean and lubricate the zippers. These three simple steps will protect and extend your zipper's lifetime. Thus, they extend the life of your backpack too.
